Student Assessment
Valuable assessment includes all the information a teacher gathers about a student: learning style, interests, peer interactions, social style, questions, choices, preferences... A teacher uses formative assessment: observation, questionning, quick quizzes, independent and group work against defined rubrics; collections of work in portfolios, projects, homework and student engagement. Summative assessment may include: a summary project, a presentation, a test, a research project, an art or drama piece, a collaborative effort, a web design, a summary portfolio, an essay. Stanford 10 Standardized Tests are administered in October.
Information from all assessment is studied for improvement in instruction and student learning. |
Assessment Periods
We assess on a four quarter/two semester basis . Midway through each quarter (with the exception of the first quarter), an Interim Progress Report is sent home. This alerts parents to strengths and opportunities to be addressed. Parents are encouraged to discuss progress with the child. The teacher may contact the parent, or vice versa, should a meeting be desired. At the end of the quarter, a Progress Report Card is sent home. Progress Reports must be signed by a parent and returned promptly.
Parent Teacher Conferences
At the end of the 1st quarter, parent teacher conferences are offered. This insures that we are personally in touch with each parent about their child. The child is not in attendance. At the end of the second semester, students use their portfolios of work to lead the parent conference. This is a very rich experience for the student who now speaks for him or herself about their school performance.
Conference times are scheduled according to teacher availabilty. Teachers make every effort to accomodate multi-child families and working parents. Parents are asked to respect the professional schedules of the instructional staff. Conference schedules may require that school is not in session.
