Preschool Religion Curriculum
Goal: The goal of the religion curriculum for the preschool child is to experience God’s love and it’s transforming power within a Catholic community, reflect on this experience in the light of the Gospel and Catholic teaching, and acquire knowledge and skills to live an active Catholic life. Tenets of our faith and spiritual objectives are integrated throughout all other areas of the curriculum.
Objectives:
• Acknowledge God as our ever present creator
• Develop an appreciation of self, family, friends and community
•
Recognize and identify the rites, symbols and celebrations of the Catholic faith
o Including: the Rosary, Thanksgiving, Advent (calendar, wreath, practices), Christmas, Lent and Easter, each child’s unique birthday, St. Francis, St. Nicholas, Mary, Joseph, St. Patrick, St. Valentine, Sign of the Cross, Baptism, encourage attendance at liturgy with family
• Develop appreciation and respect for God’s world
o Including: help and care for others, identify feelings, and conflict resolution
• Identify careers and how they serve others
• Demonstrate a variety of forms of Christian prayer enriched by Scripture, liturgy, and Catholic prayer tradition.
o Including: spontaneous prayer, formal prayer (Our Father, Hail Mary,
Glory Be, Guardian Angel), litany prayer, thank you prayer, singing prayer, prayer as talking to God.
• Listen to, read, and share Scriptures.
o Including: stories of creation, Adam & Eve, Noah, Daniel, Moses, David and Goliath, Jonah, the Nativity Story; Jesus’ miracles, the Apostles, the Last Supper, Gethsemane and the risen Christ.
• Values that focus on friendship, family, obedience, good choices, control, feelings and recognition.
